K12

Robert Baker is a high school English teacher in a metropolitan area. Most of Baker’s students speak another language at home. Due to the language barrier many of Baker’s students had difficulties with writing. To improve the writing skills of his students Mr. Baker started a classroom blog. The blog enabled the students to work at their own pace and become more confident. Mr. Baker was able to give the students feedback quickly which enable the students to revise their work before turning in the assignment. The Baker saw a great improvement in his students writing abilities over the course of the year.

Will Richardson is a high school teacher in New Jersey. Mr. Richardson uses classroom blogs in both his journalism and literature classes. Mr. Richardson’s students not only post their assignments but also read and respond to other students’ work. Mr. Richardson believes that students who are evaluated by their peers are more aware of their writings and strive for perfection.

One of the goals of No Child Left Behind is to improve education through the use of technology. There are numerous ways technology can be and is being used in the classroom to improve the quality of education a child receives. E-Learning (school or classes taken online) gives children access to a quality education no matter their location. Blogs allow students to turn in and get back assignments quickly. Also students can take tests, keep up with assignment, and look up their grades through the internet.

Technology has helped many students with disabilities accomplish things that would otherwise be impossible. Computer proved ways for students with physical disabilities to take or access notes. For years speech therapists have used type recorder to help their students improve their speech. With the help of small digital voice recorders speech students can not only practice at school but also at home. Hand held spell checks have helped many children with learning disabilities. These are just a few example of how technology has improved education.
